Effective Palmistry

Effective Palmistry
for Better Living

by: Graciela D. Ramos

The history of Palmistry is as long as man has walked the earth. Stone Age paintings can be seen in the Lascaux Caves in France and in the Santander province caves in Spain. There, in the innermost caves, can be found walls covered with paintings of human hands. Similar pictures can be found in Africa and other parts of the world. The exact purpose has been lost in the sands of time, however, it seems that universally, there has always been an interest, or importance given to that part of the body.

Ancient writings abound on the subject. According to some, the oldest manuscripts known to the modern world, found among the venerable papyri of Egypt, a recipe for the composition of women’s face paint, or “make-up”, that includes a treatise on hand reading. The ancient Vedic scriptures apparently contain much information of palmistry, and these are thousands of years old. The ancient Greeks were keen traders and it is believed that palmistry spread there from India. Aristotle wrote on the subject in De Historia Animalium more than 2,500 years ago. Alexander the Great had Aristotle write a book for him on the subject.

Palmistry is also favorably mentioned in the Old Testament. (“...And he said, Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand?” 1 Samuel 26:18. “He sealeth up the hand of every man, that all men may know his work.” Job 37:7. “Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor.” Proverbs 3:16. “ Behold, I have graven thee on the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.” Isaiah 49:16.)

In the eleventh century, an Arab physician named Avicenna, wrote his famous work called Canon of Medicine. This included material on the meanings of the shape and composition of the hand. After it was translated into Latin, a century later, it was largely responsible for the great interest in palmistry in Europe during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. From that time on, palmistry became a popular subject for published material. The invention of the printing press only enhanced the flood of books on palmistry.

Around the fourteenth century, Gypsies came into the historical picture, though they had been practicing palmistry for centuries. The Holy Roman Emperor enlisted their aid as spies. Word of this soon spread, and when Gypsies arrived at the gates of Paris in 1427, they were not allowed inside. This did not thwart the citizens who were intrigued and excited by these romantic strangers. The people of Paris rushed outside the gates to have their fortunes told.

The history of palmistry includes many famous “cheirognomists” (people who study Cheirognomy, or the study of palmistry), too many to mention in this brief history. However, their work has been invaluable. Research has been going on in medical centers around the world since the second world war. Scientists are now beginning to confirm that health factors can be determined in the hand. Dermatoglyphics (the study of skin patterns) is currently becoming the most exciting development in the history of palmistry to date. Ground breaking work is being done through the combination of palmistry and psychology. This knowledge will help us to better understand ourselves, others, and our purpose for being here. This is a glorious time we live in. A coming together of knowledge, the old and the new, which will move us powerfully into the next millennium.
